AGEING JOYFULLY

2/10/2022

We all have an innate wisdom and joy and if we stay connected to this we do not feel ‘old’ even though the body may show signs of wear and tear, or have illness and disease. By caring for ourselves and accepting our vulnerability and sensitivity, we can be role models of true strength, steadiness and a joy-full way of living. Articles on this page demonstrate the amazing qualities we all have as elders and how much we have to offer and inspire others.

SACRED SEXINESS AT 70

1/10/2022

Picture

In my younger years I was encouraged and complied with the notion that it is ‘not the done thing’ to flaunt any sexiness. Girls who freely flaunted their sexiness were dismissed as outrageous flirts and tarts – not the edible variety.

A LESSON IN EXPECTATIONS

1/10/2022

Picture

Travelling with my electric vehicle has offered me a lesson in expectations. I was reminded of this when watching a video on simple printmaking. In printmaking you have a rough idea of what you want the print to look like but the actual outcome is always a surprise.

FUDDY DUDDY

1/7/2022

Picture

Getting older can bring with it a package of funny behaviours. Things that slip in that can be considered ‘Fuddy Duddy’. These behaviours can sneak in, and you won’t even notice that they are starting to get a foothold into your life. They start gently and then once they have a footing, they pick up momentum.

THE JOY OF SURRENDER

1/5/2022

Picture

I sat down to write and the word ‘surrender’ came to me. I know nothing about surrender but as this word was floating around in the foreground of my mind for a while, I decided to practise using surrender in a practical way to build a steadier way of being.

A DAY OF MAGNIFICENCE

Last November (2021) we – Kehinde, Elaine and myself, celebrated our 70th birthdays. It was a spectacular occasion greatly enjoyed by all 116 guests. It was not just the day that was magnificent, it was the whole preparation leading up to the event that allowed for the foundation of this great celebration.

LIFE CAN BE BEAUTIFUL AS WE AGE

1/5/2022

Picture

As we age life can become more difficult or at least that is the common perception – and yet it can also become very beautiful and unfold in a way that brings greater and deeper joy into, not only our own lives but also into those around us.

THE PLAN OR 'MY' PLAN

31/12/2021

Picture
Have you ever had the feeling that life is already planned – you had a certain idea or plan, and it all worked out very different? Maybe someone else who was included in your plan has a different plan or something happens in this person’s life that takes him/her out of ‘your’ plan.
We think we have a choice but who or what is making this choice?

A SEARCH FOR JOY

30/8/2021

Picture
For most of my life joy was a mystery to me for it was an unknown. My mother had the inclination to dominate and life was made rather difficult. On reflection some parts of my life were a little like the story of Cinderella. If fun was expressed or a joyous time had been had, out would come the vacuum cleaner, dusters and furniture polish and I was made to clean or cook a Sunday roast whilst mum visited the neighbours for drinks.

JOY IN AGEING

31/7/2021

Picture
One morning I received a life changing experience.

This occurred when I returned to the hospital after the mandatory break due to the COVID restrictions. I work as a Palliative Care volunteer one day a week which was moved from a weekday to a Saturday. I realised later that there was a purpose to this.
