AGEING IN TODAY'S SOCIETY – WE ARE LIVING LONGER, BUT ARE WE LIVING WELL?

29/9/2018

Picture
I recently read that in 2050 there will be more people worldwide aged sixty and over than children under sixteen for the first time in history. Longer life spans are on the increase; however, most people are simply living their elder years in poor health, often medicated, rather than living with vitality and joy. I have personal experience of how health pans out in the elderly as my mother is 88 years old and has Alzheimer's disease.

ENJOYING HEALTH AND WEALTH AS I AGE

30/7/2018

Picture
At 56 I am feeling the best I can ever remember feeling in the whole of my life, and, each day continues to be greater than the one before. Impossible you may say! And if we take common parlance in daily life - it does buck the trend. There are many things I hear people say about ageing such as:
"It's all a downward spiral from here on"
"It's because we are getting older", or . . . . .

THE JOY OF TURNING FORTY

29/6/2018

Picture
This year I turned 40. In the lead-up to my birthday it was interesting to observe that the general consensus from those around me was quite negative. Comments like, ‘you are over the hill’ or ‘it all goes downhill from now’ etc. seemed to be the popular theme, but for me turning 40 was something I embraced wholeheartedly. In fact, I had been looking forward to it for some time.

I ENJOY AGEING

30/5/2018

Picture
Being 64 years old I can say I am truly enjoying ageing and I have felt like that for quite some years. I was never concerned about getting older, about wrinkles or being less worthy because I am older. What used to concern me was that my health, or deteriorating health would not allow me to look after myself anymore or to live independently.

LIFE IS GREAT AT 87!

29/4/2018

Picture
I would like to share how I feel about being 87 on the 22nd of this month. For some reason, I am feeling quite excited about it. Plus, I am proud to tell people that I am turning 87. What an amazing journey this life has been for me with all the ups and downs and roundabouts! I see my life as a tapestry of different colours and as a dear friend said, “Yes, it is, and it also has threads of gold running through it.”

SEXY AT SEVENTY . . .

30/3/2018

Picture
Am I allowed to feel ‘sexy’ at my tender age of being seventy-one, and if so, what does it truly mean to be sexy at this age?  This is the question I have been pondering on for a while now... and I feel I am getting closer to understanding what being sexy at seventy means to me, so let me share with you some of my pondering. Is being sexy something I want to aspire to feeling in my body?

MEMORIES - A GIFT OR A BANE?

29/3/2018

Picture
As we grow older it is generally accepted that we will start to lose some memory, (if not all of it), and there will be many reawakened memories of the past which will be more vivid than the recent present.

Why would this be so, and can we break this pattern and bring a vital, vibrant, present livingness to each moment in the last years of our lives?

agEING GRACEFULLY

30/12/2017

Picture
It is widely reported in the media that women often fear the onset of menopause – considering it to be the start of a slippery downhill slope into old age and obscurity – because with menopause often comes the idea that loss of sex appeal and attractiveness is mandatory.  And this can be particularly painful for women to contemplate: the loss of their physical beauty and with that their desirability.

AGELESS WISDOM AND PLAYFULNESS

30/11/2017

Picture
The whole age thing cracks me up. That is cracks me up as in has me laughing, not cracks me up as in lines on my face. What regularly gets me laughing is comments from others that make me aware that they must see me as being old or of a certain age. It brings home to me the fact that I don’t experience myself in that way and the amusement is at the absurdity of it all.

THE JOY OF COMMUNITY SINGING

31/10/2017

Picture
I’ve never been what you would call a singer, I never joined a choir, I never sang in public. I was one of those people who used to lip sync ‘happy birthday’ for fear someone would hear me actually singing and tell me ‘that I was singing off key.’ I never sang around the house, not even in the shower. As I got older, I could see how others were really enjoying singing, particularly in a group.
