WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD? PART 3: HOW CAN WE PREPARE FOR OUR FUTURE?

So, what does the future hold for us? Will it mean that elders will need to be proactive in all decision-making processes whether it is personal, physical or political?

Yes, definitely – empowerment for elders is in our hands – now and in the future but only if we are actively engaged in our commitment to life during these final decades.

It is really important, as we move into our elder years, to give our life meaning and to stay committed to living a fully engaged life.

Learning and growing is not just the domain of the young, we are just as capable, if not more, of beginning a new phase in learning and growing in our elder years. This is the time when we can explore more deeply what interests us and all those things that we would have loved to have done that we had previously been too busy to include in our life.

All of this contributes to us having a beautiful purpose as we age by developing a deeper understanding and realisation of what life has to offer us.

It is up to us to change the pictures and labels that we may be carrying around ageing, and to alter the reality of how many of the aged are treated, so that we are setting the model for generations coming after us. We invite you to share with us how you are remaining committed to living a fully engaged life.  Perhaps you would like to share how you are learning and growing through exploring more deeply what you had previously been too busy to include in our life. We look forward to reading your comments.

I've been a very practical person throughout life and I suppose I still am. So when I hear questions like 'How can we prepare for our future?' I immediately think of practical things like finances, housing, transportation, medical, then start to think of food, friendships etc So my comment will seem to come out of left field because it isn't practical or at least doesn't seem so at first glance. Currently, how I'm preparing for the future is by singing! That's right. I'm in a local community choir - no pressure to be a 'good' singer and no pressure to sing a solo. Just good old fun with a group of people. But it goes behind fun. What I'm experiencing is an expansion of how I am in myself. I feel more open, more flexible. I feel more confident. More joyful. Our choir director takes the time to get us feeling the vibration of the sound we are making and the vibration of the sound we are hearing, I am now noticing the vibrations not just during choir but throughout the day. It's like a new dimension. A lovely way to prepare for my future.

For me the future is already here and all I have to do is to claim it and be open to its opportunities that are continually presented. One opportunity could be joining the choir as you say Gayle, it is for you. Each of us is given opportunities in every moment of our lives because God lives in moments and so we have a choice to open the door to them or shut the door in the face of opportunities. How glorious llife is when we live it fully!

About learning and growing - there are many things that I am enjoying learning or using, that I didn't use in my previous working life, like new computer skills and forms of communication such as zoom, skype and dropbox. I also have a greater interest and understanding of biology from taking greater responsibility for my health and well-being. I am amazed at the wisdom of the body, its sensitivity and ability to communicate when I take a moment to listen.

Ageing does not need to be a block to us embracing life fully. If I can live life simply and bear in mind that even the most challenging moments are offering me an opportunity to change. As I let go of all the ideals and beliefs that have hampered me thus far I can find that life is certainly to be lived joyfully right up until the last breath.

"So what does the future hold for us?" A great question to respond to. I have a sense that if I live my everyday in joy then all will be taken care of. I have always being a planner of event etc, yet slowly this is changing, to allowing and and willingness to respond to what is asked of me on a daily basis. I am not sure how the future will unfold, yet am delighted to let it be.

I agree Mary that if we live everyday in joy then all will be taken care of. What I have come to understand is that the future is an out play or expression of how I am choosing to live now, moment by moment, because actually the future is the next moment. What I put out in this moment is what comes back to me, or could be said is waiting for me, so if I live in joy, to the best of my ability then that is what the future will hold.

This sums up some simple but profound advice on how to make the future what we want it to be. Thank you Rosemary. Live Joy now, and it will be what the next moment holds.
