NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS AND/OR NEW CYCLES

January 2020 is here and, not only is it the first month of a new year, it is the beginning of a new decade. Being the beginning of a new cycle, the ‘NewYear’ often represents for people a time to have an honest look at their lives and many make New Year’s Resolutions in an attempt to make the changes they see are needed.
In essence everyone knows what is good for them and what is not, simply because we feel when something is wrong, either it is our body displaying some discomfort, illness or disease or it is our moods and troubling thoughts. We cannot escape that knowing but we can ignore, numb and deny it – but only for a while – because it will inevitably catch up with us at some point.

This first month of the new year is often a time when we are willing to examine ourselves more deeply.

We would like to hear from you whether you feel there is something about this first month of the new year that feels more significant? Why is it that many of us are prompted by the ‘New Year’ to take stock and get an overview of our life? Is it because we have  sense of it being the end of a cycle and the beginning of another? If so, why do we wait until the new year to start a cycle when every day, every moment is the opportunity for a new beginning?

Our Topic of Conversation for January is asking our readers to comment on their experiences with coming to the end of a cycle and beginning a new one.

If you are someone who makes New Year’s Resolutions have they worked for you or have you found it hard to carry them through? What has supported you to commit to the changes you felt to make in your life?

I used to have new year resolutions but they usually did not last long. To stop reacting, stop eating this or that....is not an intention only reserved for new year.
I now have what you might call every day resolutions which are my intention to keep learning and growing, be open and work on a growing awareness and capacity to love - me and everybody and let love in.
I reflect on the year past, learn from it and appreciate everything that is to be appreciated.

For many years now, I use the week leading up to the new year to clean house. Not just a dust and vacuum (although I do that too). But I get into closets (a box for the thrift store, one for the tip), I go through old paperwork and throw out what I no longer need to keep for tax purposes, I wash down all the verandah furniture (and put a coat of wood oil on the frames. It feels great to let go of things I don't need and take care of the things that will come with me into the new year.

The house feels symbolic of my body so starting a new cycle with less (the stuff I've let go of) and a feeling of being cared for (the cleaning) translates to how I feel within myself and always gets me into the new year with a joyful foundation.

I was never one who made New Years resolutions, until an awareness became alive in me, to live each day as just another day. New Years Day becomes a another continuous new beginning. I have without perfection or total consistency marked each day as a new beginning how I live and express in this day, as I lay my head down for the nights rest I observe my day in have I spoke harshly, judged or allowed self abusive thoughts,if I allow myself be caught up in slander or ridicule of another, have I acted or reacted that caused harm to myself or another or had I felt and lived truth, within this there is no judgement only an awareness. I learn while live one day as a continuation of the one day. Until I became aware of this, life had no true meaning only an existence of trying to get through all the obligations and duties I felt were my life.I am blessed to realize that love and truth always makes my day more appreciative of each connection that has occurred and living in this way is supportive of everyone.Am I appreciative of what 2020 brings, yes will I accept everything that is on offer, probably not, yet I can already feel a greater openness and acceptance in humanity.

New Year’s resolutions - not a list of to-do’s this year, more a sense of being open to whatever is ahead, learning, opportunities, challenges, expansion, deeper understanding and as Ingrid wrote, allowing more love in, and out!
