DEPRESSION & ANXIETY – AN INTRODUCTION

1/10/2020

Feeling depressed or anxious can rob us of our natural vitality and joy of life. On these pages our writers share their experiences with you, and explain what has supported them to heal from these debilitating emotions, so that they now live with more joy and purpose and harmony in every aspect of their lives.

Depression comes in many forms. Some people are burdened with serious depression and others may have only had the occasional ‘bad day’. Sometimes depression can be a lifelong problem and for others they may only have had a short bout of depression on some occasion. So, when we talk about depression, it is good to remember that the spectrum is long and varied.

THE TUG-O-WAR OF TENSION VS POTENTIAL

30/12/2017

We read plenty of reports in the media regarding stress, mental health, alarming rates of anxiety, self-harm and the even more frightening escalation of suicide in the 'developed' world. CHOOSING MISERY OR LOVE

This story probably begins early in life, as a child, not feeling a part of whatever was happening, not belonging, even feeling like a stranger within my own family. In my teens, I was using dope and alcohol to dull the feeling of not belonging and the accompanying anxiousness.

During these times I have found that nature can be a great teacher.

As a little child I already had anxiety in my body and it was part of my daily life. After the war in Germany my parents put me in and out of an orphanage several times till the age of maybe eight or nine. I never knew when I was being picked up again to be with my sisters and family or when was the next time they would drop me off there again.

Anxiousness – a Choking Collar

24/8/2016

Picture
I would not have described myself as an anxious person, as I thought it was a condition manifesting obvious physical symptoms such as nervous or rushed speech, a worried face, obsessive compulsive behaviour. However, looking more deeply into this word, I now realise that a calm exterior can mask anxiousness very deceptively.

Don’t be Late or You Could Die!

The anxiousness of wartime experience
Sometimes I wonder what it would be like to live in someone else’s body for a day or even for an hour! Would my five senses experience something fresh and new or would it feel much the same as being in my own body? Is what is normal for the other person much the same as what I consider ‘normal’ for me?
