SELF CARE FOR A RICHER LIFE

30/11/2017

Picture
Self-care is a way of learning to look after our whole body, connecting to, listening to and feeling our reactions to the way we are treating and caring for ourselves. It is a vital and important aspect of any person’s health and wellbeing! Without taking the time to connect with our body, listen to and supply its needs, our health and wellbeing will eventually deteriorate, often quite slowly.

EMBRACING MYSELF AS A WOMAN

31/10/2017

Picture
As a child, I used to give myself a big hug when things went wrong. If I had been told off, I would literally put my arms around myself and give myself a squeeze to reassure myself I was still okay. As I became a teenager my breasts got in the way and it felt weird, so I stopped. I didn’t want to become a woman, but couldn’t stop it, so instead I chose to disconnect from myself.

BOUNCING BACK FROM ILLNESS AND DISEASE

1/8/2017

Picture
Having a diagnosis of an illness or life threatening disease can be very confronting for many of us. We can get much needed supportive advice from our medical practitioners and specialists. We also have modern technology at our fingertips, however, the overload of information the internet has available on illness and disease can send many into anxiousness in believing the worst case scenario.

TAKING THAT STOP MOMENT

4/7/2017

Picture
Sometime ago I attended a course run by the College of Universal Medicine on exhaustion. It was very powerful and the honesty with which people shared their experiences was inspiring.
Part of the course focused on what were called Stop Moments, taking time in our busy day to stop, connect with our body and feel how we are in that moment.

SETTING UP A NURTURING HOME SPA

29/4/2017

Picture
As part of my commitment to my developing awareness of including self-care rituals into my life, I have chosen one aspect of my day where I could make more loving choices. I felt it was time for me to focus on self-love, and to support my body with some deeper self-nurturing.  I have always enjoyed a bath, but it was often done in a way that was over too quickly, with my mind on the next thing on my ‘to do’ list.

LEARNING TO LIVE FROM THE INSIDE OUT - MAKING NEW LIFE CHOICES

31/3/2017

Picture
When I turned sixty I was a successful educator, having been a classroom teacher, an executive teacher, an education consultant, the principal of a large primary school in Sydney, and at this point in time a lecturer at University. There wasn’t anything left for me to ‘achieve’ – to gain identification and recognition from, to prove that I was a ‘success-in-life.’ I had reached, in the eyes of society, the top of the tree!

CHOOSING SELF-ABUSE OR SELF-CARE

28/2/2017

Picture
For many years I always thought I looked after myself well; I ate good food, exercised regularly and slept well. I seemed to have plenty of energy and life seemed great, however, I was losing weight. I tried to do things to put on weight and I had medical tests to see if there was any physical cause, but nothing showed up  – so I had to look at the quality of my life.

‘Self Care’ Am I Worth it?

28/12/2016

Picture
In our elder years we can look back on our lives and appreciate all the things we have done for others, as husbands, wives, mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, and friends; at work teaching, nursing, administrating, at home washing and cleaning, or in the community volunteering our time.
My question to myself is how lovingly did I look after myself in all of my roles? Did I care for my body, my psychological wellbeing and my health?

WHY I STOPPED DRINKING ALCOHOL

27/12/2016

Picture
I never really enjoyed the taste of alcohol, any alcohol. However, when I reached the age of eighteen and had left school it seemed that everyone did drink alcohol so I went along with everyone else. When I was growing up there were no other drugs, only alcohol. Women were definitely frowned upon if they behaved in an inebriated fashion, but young men were forgiven for bad behaviour!

Self Care – Reflections from our writers – Part 2

24/8/2016

Picture
Part one of this article described how many of the writers for the book, ‘The Joy of Ageing, Esoterically’, came to a point in their lives where they became aware that the way they were living was in total disregard for their body. As shared in part 1, all writers made the choice to be more self-caring and loving with their bodies – to be open to looking at the way they were living and willing to give new things a go to learn more about what worked for them and what didn’t. But how did they actually go about making changes? Where to start?
